“Summer reading is so important because it prevents children from getting caught in the ‘summer slide,’ the lose of reading proficiency by up to two levels while they are out of school,” explained Youth Services Librarian Veronica Coffey.
The program, with its exciting titles and hefty incentives, helps students of all ages keep their minds in top shape so they are ready to return to school in the fall, she said. By the end of the summer, the most decorated reader gets two free passes to Comic Con in October.
The program features more than 200 books, all designed, she said, to keep "imaginations soaring." A few of Coffey's favorites, along with her commentary, follow:
- Last Stop on Market Street by Matt de la Pena: “Winner of the 2016 Newbery Medal and 2016 Caldecott Honor book, this wonderfully illustrated book follows a young boy's journey on the bus with his Grandmother.”
- Macbeth #killingit by William Shakespeare and Courtney Carbone: “Part of the OMG Shakespeare series, this book translates Macbeth into, "emoji speak." Funny and entertaining, especially if you've ever had to read the original text.”
- Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys: “A historical fiction novel set during World War II and based on the true tragedy of the Wilhelm Gustloff; it is the emotional story of four teens traveling on the ill-fated ship.”
